Flamenco is the popular folk art born out of Andalusia in Southern Spain. It is primarily categorized into three components; the music, the song, and the dance. These three categories are often represented by a guitarist, a singer, and a dancer. So why does flamenco seem to continually become more popular even though it's traditional?
Flamenco Concerts
Large flamenco performances are often conducted on stage and enjoyed by hundreds if not thousands of aficionados. Just like jazz and opera, this genre has large communities of fans worldwide. When famous performers are in town, it is expected these followers are going to show up and invite friends on these events.
If you are from the UK, there is an annual festival celebrated in Sadler's Wells around February each year. This means you no longer have to travel to Spain to witness the most famous stars perform.
New Flamenco
While it is primarily traditional, new artists have contributed to the continued evolution of this genre. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why this genre continues to persist despite the passing of time.
The most famous new flamenco singer of all time is perhaps Camaron de la Isla. He received the fourth ´Llave de Oro Del Cante´ 2000, eight years after his death. Since its creation in 1862, he's only the fourth to receive such distinction. If you visit Andalusia today, do not be surprised to find many young men drive around with Camaron de la Isla tunes playing in their stereos. Together with Paco de Lucia, he brought about some of the most important new developments to the art. You may safely consider these guys as the Beatles of Flamenco.
Even after his death, Camaron de la Isla still has a large following with the new generation continually rediscovering his music.
If you are familiar with the Brian Adam's song "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" the flamenco guitarist performing in the background is Paco de Lucia.
Weddings
It is very common that someone with no prior knowledge of this genre discovers it by attending a wedding. Flamenco-themed weddings are very common especially among those with Spanish roots. During the reception, it is very likely that a flamenco guitarist and a flamenco dancer are invited to do a mini-performance that is surely to be adored by the guests.
In these events, the flamenco dancer is the main attraction. If you find yourself wanting to learn a few steps after the dancer perform, you may approach her to give you some tips. In fact, flamenco dancers would typically invite everyone to join in after her performance.
