Arabic Parts in Astrology - Specific Examples

Arabic Parts are points of power within a Western or Vedic horoscope that function as a specific significator. Unlike planets or grahas, Arabic Parts indicate the disposition of a single domain. They allow the astrologer to examine a particular facet of a client's life in a way that would not be possible with planets alone. Arabic Parts are calculated from three points: the base (almost always the ascendant) and the positions of the two planets (primary and secondary) that are most closely associated with the matter at hand.

For example, we could define a Part of Passion, a point of power that indicates the disposition and role that passion plays in the life of the client. Most astrologers would agree that Mars (Mangala) is the planet most closely associated with passion, and that Venus (Sukra) also strongly associated. We would say that Mars is the primary planet, and Venus the secondary planet.

The first step of the computation is to find the distance, in degrees, from the primary planet to the secondary planet. The direction is important. It must be from primary to secondary, as the sun moves along the ecliptic. The second step is to add this distance to the base (ascendant).

Consider this example. We compute the Part of Passion where the Ascendant is 0° Gemini (Mithunya), Mars (Mangala) is at 15° Capricorn (Makara), and Venus (Sukra) is at 20° Virgo (Kanya). The distance from 15° Capricorn to 20° Virgo is 245°. We add 245° to 0° Gemini to get 5° Aquarius (Kumbha). The Part of Passion is 5° Aquarius/Kumbha.

We can make this computation easier by defining it algebraically as:

Arabic Part = Base + Secondary - Primary

Arabic Parts will differ depending on which astrological tradition is being observed. The Western and Vedic traditions recognize different planets. In addition, they apply slightly different interpretations to the planets (grahas), so the primary and secondary planets in one cultural tradition may not be as important in the other.

For example, we could define a Part of Art, a point of power that shows the role of artistic endeavors in the client's life. Both the Western and Vedic astrological traditions would designate Venus (Sukra) as the primary planet. Modern Western astrologers would be more likely to declare Neptune as the secondary planet associated with art. Vedic astrologers, however, would be more likely to declare Buddha (Mercury) to be the secondary planet. Given these differences, each tradition would compute a different Part of Art. The judgment of the individual astrologer would also play a role in this matter.

Why Zodiac Signs Fall When They Do

Most people know what their zodiac sign is, based on their birth date. But have you ever wondered why each sign is assigned at that time of the year, and why does each sign have such particular dates associated with it?

Well, a complete understanding of the heavens and all the solar, lunar and planetary movement is a little complicated to get into in this article. But a simple explanation should help you grasp these astrology basics.

First of all, the sign you know of for yourself is more specifically your sun sign because it reflects where the sun was located at the time of your birth. We all also have moon signs and other planetary signs, based on those bodies as well.

The sky as we see it from Earth has been divided up into 12 sections, each one corresponding to a constellation that it contains. These are the zodiac signs. There are actual star constellations to match each of the signs we are familiar with (Aries, Taurus, Pisces, etc). And so, each sign takes up 1/12th of the sky. Or if you look at the sky as a circle, each sign commands 30° of the complete 360°. It's important to note that the constellations are merely used as nameplates for each section. They do not each take up exactly 1/12th of the sky. Some are much larger than others, which does not impact their role in the zodiac at all.

And so with the sky nicely divided up, your sign is determined by the location of the sun when you are born. Now, do not confuse this with the position of the sun in the sky as we see it over the course of a single day. That movement is created by the spinning of the Earth (24 hour cycle), rather than by the orbit of the Earth around the Sun (just over 365 day cycle). It's the circle created by the orbit that we are talking about here.

The Zodiac year starts on the Spring Equinox when the length of day and night are equal, usually on March 21st. At that point of the year, the sun is in Aries and that is why Aries is always listed as the first sign. The rest of the signs follow in suit until the year ends at Pisces.

Q: How do tarot card readings predict my future? Are they simply for entertainment purposes... or can the tarot really tell where my life is going to go?

A: This is a very common, somewhat complex and often controversial question that deserves a detailed answer. Of course, while there are many different opinions on what is happening during a tarot reading, one thing that MOST agree on is that done properly, the tarot is an excellent tool for gauging what the past, present and future holds.

First, understand this BIG point:

The tarot is an interpretive tool. The cards are NOT clairvoyant or magical in of themselves. A good reader is as much psychic, as they are psychologist! As a matter of fact, I know a few people who are excellent tarot readers and are well regarded professionally, who don't really even believe in psychic abilities at all, and do tarot in a clinical, medical setting. Southern Hemisphere Astrology - How It Resembles Northern Hemisphere Astrology

Astrology in the Southern Hemisphere has always been a subject of contention among scholarly astrologers. The Western and Vedic astrological traditions were developed in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is from that perspective that we interpret the movement of the planets (grahas), houses (bhavas), and signs (rashis). For the most part, astrologers have interpreted the movement of the planets in the Southern Hemisphere the same as in the Northern Hemisphere. But most serious-minded people find this unsatisfactory. How can we apply the same interpretations when, at the same point in time, one hemisphere is under the winter solstice, and the other beneath the summer solstice?

By analyzing planets, houses, and signs in detail, we can determine how these concepts should be applied to Southern Hemisphere horoscopes. We find that planets and houses can be interpreted almost the same as in the Northern Hemisphere. But signs (rashis) need to be completely redefined. We discuss the planets and houses here.

The planets/grahas exert the same influence in the Southern Hemisphere as in the Northern Hemisphere, except for the Lunar Nodes. To adapt the Nodes to both hemispheres, we must interpret the Nodes as ascent toward and decent from the polar regions, not as ascent toward and descent from the North Pole specifically. In the Northern Hemisphere, the north is seen as the height, the south as the depth. This sense of direction is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.

In Western astrology, in the Southern Hemisphere, we would interpret the North Node as the comfort zone or impediments to be overcome, and the South Node as what we must achieve in life. This is the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere interpretation. In Vedic astrology, in the Southern Hemisphere, the North Node would be interpreted as Ketu, the worldly misfortune that brings enlightenment. The South Node would be interpreted as Rahu, the source of frenzy and addiction.

The meaning of the houses/bhavas remains the same (1st = self, 2nd = money, 3rd = neighborhood... ). The temporal order of the houses remains the same. But the spatial position of the houses is reversed. They are a mirror image about the vertical axis. When we view the celestial equator and ecliptic from the Southern Hemisphere, we see that the eastern horizon (the Ascendant) is at our right, not our left. The signs/rashis ascend or cross the Ascendant moving counter-clockwise, not clockwise. In Western and Vedic astrology, the houses/bhavas are assigned their meanings according to their temporal sequence, the order in which they cross the eastern horizon. This meaning is retained in the Southern Hemisphere. The temporal sequence is the same as the North. But the spatial sequence is a mirror image. The first house (bhava) is below the horizon on the right (not left). The seventh house is above the horizon on the left (not right).

Q: Why do mediums use tarot cards? Shouldn't they be able to communicate with spirits, or the other side without needing a spiritual "tool" like tarot?

A: This is a pretty good question, and to be totally honest with you... it really depends on the psychic or medium that you are speaking of.

Most mediums that I've spoken with or interviewed don't use the tarot, but others do, and I don't see any conflict or anything unusual about it at all.

Here is why:

Wesley Flint's Dim-Witted Daughter

An outlander, a heavy booted carnival merchant married Wesley Flint's only daughter, only child: dim-witted Sally Flint of almost twenty-years; lived on a small farm outside the city limits of St. Paul, Minnesota, like hermits.

Even after twenty-years of marriage old man, Wesley Flint watched over his daughter, against the wilds, and potential harm, Rambling Ramsey (his son-in-law)might inflict upon her-might do, not that he had ever harmed her, but it was in his head, he might. He was the one who gave Ramsey the four-acres of land, and even built a farm house on it for them, so they'd be close by.

According to the nearby township of Stillwater, according to the resident's accounts, old Flint hardly went anywhere, in his later years, he simply just raised chickens and pigeons, sold them at the Farmers' Market, in the downtown area of the City of St. Paul, so rumor said.

He bought Sally a new truck, and he drove a second hand truck himself, a 1952, vintage; he bought the new truck in 1982. This is the truck Mr. Ramsey would drive Sally to church in every Sunday; when he'd go play cards at the neighbors. In fact, everyone said he bought the truck for Ramsey just so he'd go and play cards, get out of his way, leave him and Sally alone for an hour or two out of the week. Nor did he allow Ramsey a foot into his house unless he had to, that is, on Christmas, or holidays, his birthday, or Sally's birthday, or when Ramsey came to pick her up after she made a meal for her father, now and then, living no more than four acres away.

Ramsey was a man in his early fifties now. Taller than short, thinner than heavy; in fact he didn't have much of a shadow; but what he did have was a cantankerous un-intellectual smirk on his face, permanently enveloped in plaster of Paris, which never appeared to crack one iota. He was lazy as the day is long, other than once being a dweller among the city's bars.

He was known throughout the county, Dakota County, as an opportunist by folks he'd never met. He drank his wine heated with sugar in it, said it made him sweat all the evils, and poisons out of him at night. He'd drink it as if it was water, or cool aid.

Then this Friday, old Wesley phoned the sheriff he had killed his son-in-law, just like that, saying: "I done brought him into the outside privy, you can come and get him there, anytime you wish."

"It was an accident," said the sheriff; then hesitated, as if waiting for Wesley to confirm that statement. "Of course, you can update me when I get out there." He added.

"No," said Wesley, "I aint never said that, nor did I lead youall to think that, I done killed him, straight and truthful, that's exactly what I did, and I feel all the better for it!"

The Sheriff briefly and quickly brought the matter up to the County Attorney.

"Interesting," said the County Attorney, "I've known old man Flint ever since I was a kid, and his dim-witted daughter Sally, what's he gone local?"

"I best hightail it on out there, see what's goin' on," said the Sheriff.

"Yaw," said the County Attorney, "find out the facts, seems to me like a rare case."

Henry Dodge, was a big man, with big owl like eyes, and floppy ears, a broken nose, pot belly, he had seen his day, not much of a neck, but alert, perhaps closer to sixty than fifty. Not fast moving, but moving nonetheless, and spitting out that tobacco like a pigeon flaps its wings.

"Well, sheriff, why did he kill him?" questioned the County Attorney.

"What are the facts?"

"Why does a father kill a son-in-law, you mean?" he comes back with.

"Yes, why?" asked the County Attorney.

"It's seems to me, he's got thinkin' his days are numbered, he's eighty-five now, you-know! and he knows Ramsey's waiting for him to drop dead-to inherit his whatever he's got, and killing a varmint like Ramsey, knowing his daughter might not be safe, while he's in his grave, well, that was just all too much for him to take. I do believe he'll sleep better now I reckon, something like that."

"Well," said the County Attorney, "that makes sense to me. He hasn't a thing to lose I suppose, or so he feels, a year or two in jail and bingo he's gone-and left us with all the paperwork and tax overload."

He batted his eye some. For a minute, maybe more, gave the papers on his desk a hard look.

"So he wants the county to room and board him and then pay for his funeral in a year or so, that's it in a nutshell, and to boot, his daughter likewise."

"I was thinking the same thing," said Sheriff Dodge, a mouth full of slimy tobacco juice dripping onto his lips, looking for a spittoon.

"No one saw the killing, correct?" asked the County Attorney.

"Not even a bird," said the Sheriff, and Sally, she's down at the jail visiting her father, comforting him.

"Good daughter," said the County Attorney, adding... "What do they call them things, you know when, when: an unexpected result of a cartridge fires in a rifle, causing a fragmented explosion during its escape, you know what I mean don't you... ?"

"Yes, sir, a backfire," said the Sheriff.

"That's what I think really happened; he's a bit senile anyhow, right?"

"Right!... "
