Do you remember, last time when you handled a difficult employee at your workplace? How did you tackle that employee and what was the outcome? What did you learn from it, in order to handle such situations effectively in the future?
Nowadays, no matter where you work, you will find difficult employees to deal with. You cannot avoid them completely especially when you are working at a managerial post. Terminating the employees who create problems is not an appropriate step because it will show that the manager is not capable enough to handle such people. Termination should be the last option in case you think that nothing can be done about a problem-creating employee.
While dealing with such difficult employees, or when we get unexpected responses from them, we immediately go into a defensive mode, which is not the right approach. Nowadays, there are so many smart steps that one can take in order to handle such employees at workplace.
Following are a few of them, which you can take while handling difficult employees:
Be Calm and Contained: Losing your temper while talking to the problem-creating employee is not an advisable approach. Unless you are doing it deliberately in order to maintain the discipline, it is better to be contained, emotionally intelligent, and calm. When that employee will see that you are calm regardless of what he/she does, you will start to see some changes in his attitude.
Understand the intentions of the employee: There are always some reasons that motivate them to behave in an odd manner at a workplace. Try to figure it out what is stopping them from cooperating with you. After knowing the reasons, resolve the issues if you can, but never compromise on the discipline at workplace. Once you will do this, situation may go out of your hands.
Talk to others to get their perspective: Talk to your friends and colleagues, because they must have faced this kind of situation in their professional lives. They will share their experiences with you and this may lead you to have an appropriate solution.
Let the employees know about your intentions: Sometimes employees show resistance because they think that you are against them or that you have personal differences with them. Therefore, let them know about your intentions behind what you want to do or implement.
Transparent Policies: Being a manager it is your duty to make all policies transparent in order to discourage a feeling in the problem- creating employees that they are being implemented just for them. Make them realize that rules are equal for everybody.
Do not stop respecting people: Do not mix professional and personal relations while handling difficult people at your workplace. Treat them with respect no matter how they behave with you. Eventually they will realize that they were wrong.
Ignore them and involve higher management: In case you have tried the above-mentioned points, and still the employees are not bothered to realize what they are doing, then the best way is to ignore them. Interact with them when needed and keep an eye on their tasks, whether they are doing them effectively or not. Evaluate them based on their work and behavior, and report to the higher management. However, be careful while using this option because higher management would think that you are not capable enough.
Try out these steps while handling difficult people at your workplace and see whether they work out for you or not.
